Q. What is the eligibility criterion for Civil Services?

  • Age Limit: To appear in this exam the age limit is
  • General category: 21 to 32years
  • OBC: 21 to 35 years
  • SC/ST: 21 to 37 years
  • Physically Handicap: 21 to 42 years>
  • Educational Qualification: Graduation from any stream. The final year appearing student can also appear for the exam.

Q. How many attempts can one give?

• The number of attempts are as under
• General category – 6
• OBC – 9
• SC/ST – No limit till the age of 37 years.
• Physically Handicapped – 9
Q. How many hours per day should one devote for the preparation of Civil Services?

If qualitative studies are done for one year, devoting 6 to 8 hours a day for 6 days a week consistently is sufficient .Take a one day break every week and relax yourself .This will rejuvenate your enthusiasm for the next week.
Q. Is it necessary to read 2-3 newspapers along with 2-3 magazines for current affairs?

It is a myth that extensive newspaper reading is essential. Any one national newspaper would suffice. Further civil services specific magazines like Chronicle, Competition Wizard etc. can be subscribed.
Q. How should one start preparing for the civil services exam?

It is always better to start the preparation for mains along with P.T. as we know that the syllabus for mains is much wider than preliminary exam and the time between P.T. and mains is just four months which is not sufficient for preparation. Once Mains is thoroughly prepared, prelims preparation is a matter of few days.
Q. How should I prepare for the Essay exam?

There is no specific preparation for essay exam. After 3-4 months of preparation, you will be in position to write a good essay as you will be sufficiently groomed in various areas. At this time you must start practicing essay writing.
Q. I have applied for the exam but will not be able to appear due to certain problems. Will my attempt be counted?

Your attempt is not counted by mere filling the form. Unless you appear for your first paper of Prelims Test your attempt is not counted.
Q. I have cleared preliminary test but am not able to write mains due to certain reasons, what would happen?

Your attempt is lost. The result of not appearing in mains or not have cleared mains is same. That is, again apply for P.T. next year. So it is better to plan for the entire exam well in advance.
Q. Is a candidate from OBC list of state eligible for age relaxation under UPSC, if he is not from the center’s list of OBC?

NO, under UPSC, he is not eligible for relaxation but under state’s commission exam he will be eligible for relaxation.
Q. Are some optional subjects more scoring than others?

Scoring depends upon the quality of answers. Some subjects like Sociology have a lot of overlapping .Therefore the syllabus can be completed quickly and more time can be devoted to improving the quality of your answer.
Q. What should I keep in mind while choosing an optional subject?

Two things must be kept in mind:
1. Your comfort level with the subject &
2. Kind of guidance and material available
It is not mandatory that your optional subject should be from your stream. The most commonly chosen subjects are Sociology, History, Psychology, Geography and Public Administration. If you are too good at your own subject and can easily solve the paper on the same subject asked by UPSC then you should definitely have it as optional subject. But if you are not able to solve then you should switch on to some other subject (preferably from the above mentioned subjects)

Q. While writing answers during Mains, is a high level English required?

Any answer in simple language with all relevant points in it is a good enough answer to score well.
Q. How can a student be sure about the word count in examination hall?

Ans. No one can count exact number of words for each answer in the examination hall. Only an estimate of words can be taken. A good estimation can be achieved by a consistent answer writing practice.
Q. It is true that candidates who answer in English get more marks than the one who answered in Hindi?

Ans. This is not true at all. An examiner does not give marks upon the language used to answer the question. Marks are given on the basis of the quality of the answer. Content matters not the language
Q. I have completed my studies from an open school/university. Can I appear for civil services?
Yes you can (degree from any recognized university, any stream makes you eligible).

MBA Exam Spectrum & Selection Process

Till 2011, the MBA entrance examination spectrum was highly fragmented with at least 13 National level tests vying the hapless student’s attention! Once through with the National level tests, one had to contend with the state level examinations.

Broadly speaking, National level tests are conducted at multiple location across the country and represent large ‘brands’ whereas state level tests are conducted for institutes located in a particular Indian state and meant mainly for students belonging to the state.

  • Indian Administrative Service.
  • Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the IIMs, with around 165 other prominent B-schools affiliated
  • XLRI Admission Test (XAT) conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur, with almost 60 B-schools affiliated
  • Symbiosis National Aptitude Test (SNAP) conducted in the aegis of the Symbiosis University for all colleges under their umbrella (the test experience last year was quite a mixed one for students)
  • National Management Aptitude Test (NMAT) conducted by NarseeMonjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai
  • Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) entrance test
  • Tata Institute of social studies (TISS) entrance test
  • Institute of Rural management, Anand (IRMA) entrance test

However, big changes are afoot in the industry.
From 2012-13 onwards, CAT will remain one of the topmost and central entrance exam, to be followed by perhaps just one or two more.
Since you are a serious IIM aspirant, we advise you to focus on CAT and everything else will take care of itself.

Selection Process

In spite of the diversity of examinations, the selection process generally consists of two stages

  • Written aptitude tests (mostly objective, multiple choice)
  • Personality assessment (consists of group discussion & personal interviews)

The Written tests

The MBA entrance written tests are based on a person’s general intelligence and basics aptitude and questions are asked from some or all of the areas below

  • Reading Comprehension
  • English Usage, Vocabulary, Grammar
  • Mathematical Aptitude
  • Data Interpretation (Drawing information from tables, graphs, charts, or any forms of scattered data)
  • Data Sufficiency (A type of mathematical reasoning)
  • Logical Reasoning (A variety of questions involving basic reasoning skills)
  • Visual Reasoning
  • General Knowledge (current not so current GK based on Socio-politico-economic events)

The Personality Assessment stage

If it is the student’s aptitude that is being tested in the Written Test stage, it is his attitude and personality that is being tested in the Personality Assessment stage. It is done using a variety of means, some of which are

  • Writing Ability Test(WAT)
  • Group Discussions
  • Group Tasks and Role Plays
  • Case Discussions
  • Psychometric Tests
  • Presentations and Extempore
  • Personal interviews
  • Group interviews

Thus the overall section process tries to ensure a balanced assessment of hard and soft skills of the potential CEOs of the future!

CMAT – Common Management Admission Test

To reduce the burden of exams on students, the AICTE took a very progressive decision to do-away with most exams and introduce just one in their place – the CMAT exam – Common Management Admission Test.

This exam score will have to be accepted by all AICTE approved PGDM institutions in India. Since all leading “MBA institutes” are operating on the PGDM model only, hence CMAT will de-facto become the leading test.

In Feb 2012, the AICTE conducted the first National level CMAT-2012. The testing window for computer based test was open for nine days i.e. from 20th February, 2012 to 28th February, 2012 in 61 cities. The candidates had an option of selecting the date and city for appearing in the test.

In the year 2012, a massive 70,000 candidates across the country registered for the first CMAT test. But next year onwards, as CMAT is going to replace many national and state level tests, this number will be many times more. The online entrance test was held for giving admission to more than 2000 B Schools in the country.

Graduates in any discipline or Final year students of Graduate Courses can apply for CMAT.
